The livestock mart for West Cumbria & The Lake District (and the oldest livestock mart company in Gt. Britain) will open its new livestock centre for the first sale on Friday 24th. May 2002. The 16 acre complex located just off the A66 at the Cockermouth roundabout has been under construction since last October and will offer farmers a broad range of facilities on the site so that their time visiting the mart can be well spent.The new mart building covers nearly 1.3 acres and houses two sale rings and fully covered penning with an easy off-load and loading facility together with full vehicle wash facilities and ample (FREE) parking. The most important issue for the company was to get the livestock rings operational and add in the other facilities over the coming months. Mitchell's has existed for the benefit of local farmers for more than 130 years. The Company has taken a gamble in building a new mart at a time when the farming industry has been through the worst crisis in living memory. The Company firmly believes that Cumbrian farming has a good future but this can only be achieved if farmers support the mart. Working together is the best way forward.
