FMD - Secretary of
State Hilary Benn has made a Written Statement to Parliament
this morning regarding an incident this week at the Merial
facility on the Pirbright site, believed to have involved a
leaking valve within the vaccine production system. The
incident was contained by the rigorous bio-security safety
mechanisms in place. An inspection team visited the site
yesterday morning, and they are assured that live Foot and
Mouth virus has not been released into the environment.
Defra has suspended Merial's license to permit the use of
FMD and Bluetongue viruses for vaccine production - Click

Bluetongue: Latest
situation -
Since 22 September,
laboratory tests have detected the presence of Bluetongue in
a number of animals on several different premises in South
East England. Defra confirmed on 28 September the
circulation of Bluetongue disease between the local animal
and midge population in East Anglia. The disease has since
been confirmed in other parts of south-east England.
Surveillance and Protection Zones have been established and
are extended when necessary.
Markets within the Bluetongue
Surveillance and Protection Zones have (since Sunday 14
October) been permitted. Markets may operate as usual within
these Zones provided the animals stay within the Zones after
sale unless they are going to slaughter at approved
slaughterhouses.
As at 16.30pm on 23
November 2007 there were 65 confirmed premises affected by
Bluetongue. This figure will normally be updated weekly on a
Friday.

DEFRA
invites BT Vaccine Tenders
-
but not for Scotland
and Wales.
I am utterly appalled to
hear from Chris
Stockdale, (Stakeholder DEFRA Group) that the 10-20
million doses of BT vaccine
DEFRA has put out to tender are for England
alone and that the devolved states, Scotland and Wales are
'free to do as they see fit'.
Thanks for telling us - no
one else has!
When DEFRA's incompetence
has led to the disasters farmers and their livestock
are facing this year, through imposed restrictions to
supposedly prevent disease,
the fact that DEFRA can exclude Scotland and
Wales from the purchase of vaccine, which actually would
prevent the disease,
is shaming.
Especially when the EU has
already said they would pay for it and 50% of
vaccination costs during the first year.
If Scotland and Wales had
known they were to go it alone, perhaps they would
have had the sense to ignore the imposed restrictions and
order the vaccine
months ago.
Did they know?
I have contacted my MSP and
MP and of course, the Press, So far it seems
to have come to them as a surprise too.
Talk about 'divide and rule'
they certainly are making a good job of it.
It really is time DEFRA was
thrown to the dogs and I hope they rip it to
pieces. It will be no more than they deserve having ruined
so many farmers over
the past six years.
Farmtalking has done nothing
but try to advise farmers of DEFRA's intentions,
publishing their press releases, notifications and license
updates, etc. and trying to
support farmers when their animals became victims
of cruel slaughter policies for FMD, TB, BSE, etc.
I've been constantly hoping
things would improve, as we published the truth
about vaccinations, research and other helpful
information, tenancy
agreements, land registrations etc. At this moment, I feel
it has all been a
complete waste of my time which would have been far
better spent working full
time for Alex Salmond and devolution!
I may live in 'Scotland' but
I am 'English' and was proud to be 'British'
but perhaps not any more!
Maybe I'll calm down, in
time but just for now - I'm furious! - JB.Ed
